Why work here at Taulia?

August 8, 2014 Keith Chapman

When I interviewed for a job at Taulia, I came in at 5 p.m. on a Thursday. Little did I know that this timeslot coincided with a company event known as Taulia Thursday—a monthly occasion when the entire San Francisco staff trades working for socializing, sharing laughs over drinks in our open office space.

As I made my way to the interview, I was introduced to several cheerful Taulia employees (many with a beer in hand!) who greeted me with a smile and handshake. Everyone was welcoming, and these strangers acted as if I was already a member of the team—even though I hadn’t even interviewed yet, much less been hired. After about a dozen of these greetings, I made it to the interview room. I tried to focus on the questions from our COO and President Jonathan Lowenhar, but kept getting distracted by the loud laughter and music outside the room.

At the end of the interview, Jonathan asked if I had any questions. Yes, I said—how does Taulia get all these smart, down-to-earth people to work care about the Accounts Payable space? And do they actually enjoy hanging out each other as much as they seem to?

While I can’t speak for all of my co-workers, I imagine that a large reason why these folks are attracted to Taulia is the work environment. Taulians take their work seriously, but not themselves. That’s one reason why Taulia’s been twice selected as one of the best places to work in the Bay Area. And the perks—free lunches, commuter costs covered, stock options, almost too much paid vacation to even take—well, they speak for themselves.

You can often tell a good work environment by the way a company pays attention to details. Taulia makes a point to celebrate employees work anniversaries and birthdays with gifts, and cards signed by the entire team. In addition, Taulia employees have the opportunity to ask any question of the management team, anonymously, which the executives answer in front of the entire company at regular staff meetings. So there’s no wondering what’s going on behind closed doors.

Another aspect that makes Taulia a great place to work is that our industry is fascinating. Having been an outsider to the space until three months ago, I know that the world of business-to-business software can seem complicated. But it comes easily. Essentially, what we do is work with the world’s largest corporations to help them become more profitable, while simultaneously helping the small businesses that supply to those corporations. It’s work that is exciting, cutting-edge, and gratifying.

Perhaps most importantly, we’re constantly working, from intern to CEO, to improve Taulia’s work environment. As Thomas Edison once said, “We shall have no better conditions in the future if we are satisfied with all those which we have at present.”  Taulians seem to have taken this to heart.
